16 Days, 16 ways to take a stand

16 days of activism is more than a campaign—it’s a global call to confront gender-based violence in all its forms. Across these 16 days, we unite to highlight the diverse issues affecting individuals and communities worldwide, from the hidden struggles of survivors to the systemic barriers that perpetuate harm. Each day is a chance to raise awareness, spark conversations, and inspire actions that challenge inequality and foster justice.  This is your call to action — explore, engage, and take a stand.

Violence and discrimination in menstrual hygiene management prevent women and girls from accessing resources, resulting in stigma and barriers to education. In some places, menstrual products are inaccessible, and taboos around menstruation lead to mistreatment.

Why 16days of activism?

We strive for a world where everyone is safe and supported

The 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence is not just a campaign—it's a global call for change. Running annually from November 25 (International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women) to December 10 (Human Rights Day), these 16 days amplify our collective voice to challenge and eliminate violence in all its forms.  Why 16 days? Because every day counts. Every voice matters. This powerful initiative began in 1991, when women activists from across the globe came together to create a space for reflection, education, and action. Since then, it has grown into a movement observed in over 180 countries, urging us all to stand in solidarity with survivors and commit to ending gender-based violence.  These 16 days are about more than awareness; they’re about action. Action that demands policy change, builds safer communities, and amplifies the voices of those who have been silenced by violence. The time is now—we rise, we advocate, and we stand together to break the cycle and build a world where violence has no place

Raise Awareness

Raising awareness is essential to changing how society perceives and responds to gender-based violence (GBV). It goes beyond sharing statistics—it's about shifting attitudes and behaviors, particularly regarding overlooked forms of abuse like emotional and psychological violence. Awareness efforts educate communities on the impacts of GBV, available resources, and how to support survivors. By using media campaigns and public events, we challenge the normalization of violence and work towards creating a culture of understanding, where collective action is seen as crucial to ending GBV.

Empower Communities

Communities play a pivotal role in preventing and responding to GBV. Empowerment begins with education—ensuring that community members understand their rights, recognize the signs of abuse, and know how to offer support. Empowered communities can create safe spaces, provide survivors with access to resources, and foster a culture of respect and equality. Through prevention programs and youth education, we make communities active participants in the fight against GBV.

Support Survivors

Supporting survivors goes beyond sympathy _it involves providing immediate and long-term assistance. Survivors need access to shelters, medical care, legal aid, and counseling. Equally important is reducing the stigma survivors face by offering trauma-informed care that promotes healing and dignity. Giving survivors a platform to share their experiences not only aids their recovery but also empowers them to advocate for change and inspire others, helping to shape a future free from violence.

Drive policy change

Policy change is key to eliminating GBV in the long run. Stronger laws, better enforcement, and greater accountability for offenders are essential for creating lasting change. Advocacy during the 16 Days of Activism pushes for more inclusive laws, increased resources for prevention and survivor support, and comprehensive public education campaigns. Involving survivors and activists in policy-making ensures that reforms are effective and contribute to a safer, more just society for all.
